We recently attended a commercial property that was experiencing frequently blocked drains. The drains were repeatedly backing up, despite previous attempts to clear them.
Rather than simply clearing the blockage and waiting for the next call-out, we decided to investigate the root cause.
A CCTV drainage survey was carried out, and it revealed exactly why the problem was happening.
The internal pipework was heavily affected by hard, compacted drain encrustation throughout the drainage system. Over time, this had significantly reduced the internal diameter of the pipes and restricted the flow.
And here’s where the trouble starts…
Tissue and waste were catching on the rough, heavily encrusted surfaces inside the pipework, creating the perfect conditions for further build-up and recurring drain blockages.
In simple terms — the pipes were technically still there, but they were becoming more like a straw with a load of concrete stuck inside it!
A standard drain unblocking only treats the symptom.
By carrying out a CCTV drain survey, we were able to identify the underlying problem and provide the property with a much clearer picture of what was actually happening inside the drainage system.
This is why CCTV drainage surveys can be particularly valuable for commercial properties suffering from recurring drainage issues. Instead of repeatedly paying to clear the same blocked drain, identifying the cause allows the correct remedial work to be considered.

We were recently called out to a catchpit that had become completely full of silt, sludge and debris, leaving very little room for the drainage system to do its job.
A full catchpit can quickly become a problem. When the pit fills up, debris and sediment can begin making their way into the connecting pipework, restricting flow and potentially causing blocked drains, drains backing up and other unwanted drainage issues.
This one definitely needed some attention!
We got to work using a wet vac to empty and clean the catchpit, removing the accumulated material and ensuring the surrounding pipework was clear and able to flow freely.
The result? A clean catchpit and unrestricted drainage flow.
We also advised the customer that this catchpit should ideally be emptied and maintained every 3–6 months, depending on how quickly it fills.
